How to install eduroam for Apple iPhone 3G

Note: This guide describes how to connect an iPhone 3G to the eduroam service only. Access via eduroam does not guarantee that any services or systems are compatible and/or usable with the iPhone 3G. As the platform is currently not supported by ITS Service Desk, these instructions are provided for informational purposes only.

1. Installation

Step 1 - Connect to install-wireless

  • From the iPhone Home screen tap Settings then Wi-Fi.
  • Tap install-wireless.
  • Once the blue tick appears next to install-wireless you can use this connection to download the configuration profile as described in Step 2.

Step 2 - Download and install the eduroam Configuration Profile

  • When connected to install-wireless the iPhone will present a Log In page as shown below..

  • Select student or staff, Australian campus and at other universities, then install eduroam for the iPhone 3G
  • Skip to section 2 and tap on the following url on your iPhone:

    You will be presented with the following

    Download the Monash profile

  • Tap Cancel.
  • The Install Profile screen will be displayed for eduroam.
  • Tap Install.

  • The iPhone will inform you that the configuration has not been verified and will change settings on your iPhone.
  • Tap Install Now.

  • Enter your Authcate username@monash.edu.au and password when prompted.

Step 3 - Connect to eduroam

  • Now that the eduroam profile has been installed you must disconnect from install-wireless and then connect to eduroam.
  • From the iPhone Home screen tap Settings then Wi-Fi.
  • Tap the blue arrow to the right of install-wireless.

  • Tap Forget this Network, then tap Forget Network to confirm.
    Note: You may not get the option to Forget this Network depending on the operating system of your iPhone.

  • Tap the Wi-Fi Networks button at the top to return to the Wi-Fi Networks selection screen.
  • Tap eduroam.
  • You will be presented with a Certificate screen for eduroam.monash.edu.
  • Tap Accept

  • Once a tick appears next to eduroam you will be connected to the service.

2. Usage Notes

Please note that if the signal strength for eduroam is too weak the iPhone could use the carrier data network instead resulting in expensive charges. Its recommended that each time before using the iPhone on campus that you check the following:

  1. Ensure you are in a eduroam strong coverage area (refer to Wireless Locations)
  2. From the iPhone Home Screen tap Settings then Wifi and make sure a blue tick appears next to eduroam.
  3. Ensure that the Wi-Fi symbol iPhone connected via Wi-Fi remains visible at the top left corner of the screen when using the data connection.

3. Connecting

If the iPhone doesn't automatically connect to eduroam you can manually select the service (once Step 1 - Installation has been completed).

  1. From the iPhone Home screen tap Settings then Wifi.
  2. Tap eduroam.

Note: Occasionally you may have to renew the certificate used by the eduroam service. If this is required the certificate screen will be presented. Tap Accept and the new certificate will be installed.

4. Uninstall / Remove eduroam

If the eduroam profile needs to be removed for any reason, from the Home screen tap Settings then General then Profile Monash Connect. Tap Remove.
