IP Telephony standards for emergency & life-line phones
These are the standards that are applied to emergency and life-line phones throughout the university under the IP Telephony service.
Red emergency phones
The existing red emergency phones are not altered as part of the IP Telephony (VoIP) project. They are operated and maintained by Facilities & Services as part of the fire system.
Life-line phones
Life-line phones can be located in places such as laboratories, lifts, tunnels and freezers. These have the function of communicating to someone on the outside in the case of an emergency. Under the IP Telephony (VoIP) environment the existing analogue phone(s) are migrated 'as is' to the IP Telephony environment. They are connected to the IP Telephony environment using the existing telephone wiring connected to Analogue Telephone Adapters (ATA) situated in central locations within each campus.
Lift phones need to comply with the Lift Code AS1735:
- An intercom powered by the emergency supply shall be provided between the lift car and the machine room.
- Provide communication facilities with a two-way voice type, that can automatically identify the lift and location and make direct connection to a permanently attended location. The button for the system shall be 700mm to 1250mm from the floor.
- Batteries for the communication shall have a capacity of one hour talk time and one hour stand-by.
- If there is a risk of being trapped, provide a communication system under and at the top of car.
- Number of the lifts from left to right, consecutively with the observer facing the lift at the main floor.
Standard phones
Standard office IP Phones are connected via the data network and will be powered by the building power. While these phones can be used to contact campus security during most emergencies they will not operate if the emergency has resulted in a power outage.
Standard office analogue phones, including cordless phones are connected to the IP Telephony environment using the existing telephone wiring connected to Analogue Telephone Adapters (ATA).
Analogue telephone adapter
Analogue Telephone Adapters (ATA) are located in the existing PABX room(s) at each campus and power to them is provisioned with sufficient backup UPS capacity to provide 1 to 2 hours of uninterrupted power to the phones connected to them.
