Install and configure Lotus Traveler on a Windows mobile device

This is a guide on how to set up Lotus Notes Traveler for your PDA/handheld device.

Before you begin

Be sure to backup all contacts, data and important information on the phone before attempting this procedure. ITS are not responsible for the loss of any data or information on your phone.

Connection types

Supported internet connection types include:

  • USB Cable via Microsoft ActiveSync (PC)
  • Bluetooth connection via Microsoft ActiveSync (PC)
  • Wi-Fi internet connection on compatible device (wireless)
  • 3G/GPRS/HSDPA connection via your phone (wireless)

Note:

  • You can use Monash Connect or general wireless hotspots to connect to Traveler when you are off campus.
  • Solve Communications only support phone lines paid for and arranged by Monash University.
  • Using a GPRS/3G connection via your phone provider is not free and can become expensive.

Hardware and software requirements

General:

  • Windows Mobile 5 device (or above)
  • Lotus Notes fully configured and working.

Phone carrier and account:

  • 3G SIM card
  • Active GPRS/HSDPA internet connection

Note: To download a high quantity of attachments and large e-mails via GPRS/3G connection it is recommended you organise a data plan for your usage.

Wi-Fi requirements:

  • Wi-Fi capability .
  • Device is compatible and working with Monash-Connect (if you wish to use this wireless services)

USB/cradle requirements:

  • Microsoft ActiveSync installed on your machine.

Bluetooth requirements:

  • Microsoft ActiveSync installed on your machine.
  • Bluetooth capability
  • Phone and PC are able to ‘pair’ via Bluetooth.

Also required :

  • Exact model of your device
  • Which version of Windows Mobile is on your device.

Step 1: Installing Traveler on your mobile device

Note: These steps including screenshots are based on a device running Windows Mobile 6.0. This may vary depending on your device and version of Windows Mobile.

  1. Establish an internet connection on your device (see: Connection types)
  2. Select Start>Internet Explorer

  3. Enter traveler.its.monash.edu.au in the address bar.

  4. Login using your Lotus Notes username and password .

  5. Select your version of Windows Mobile and your language. Do not select a "Smart Phone" option.

    • If you are using Windows Mobile 6.1 select Windows Mobile 6.0 Pocket PC

  6. Select ‘Yes’. Once the download is complete installation will begin automatically.

  • Once your software has finished installing a Configuration Wizard will appear. See Step 2.


Step 2: Setup your Lotus Notes Traveler

  1. Select Next
  2. Enter your Lotus Notes username and password
  3. Enter traveler.its.monash.edu.au in the Server field. Select Next.

  4. Select your preferred applications.

    Note: You cannot synchronise email and calendar separately.

  5. Select Next, then Finish to complete the setup.
  • It will take a few minutes for Traveler to download your Lotus Notes information.  Your Traveler is installed properly if you can see a small Lotus Notes icon with a lightning bolt through it at the bottom of your screen .

Step 3: Configure your Lotus Notes Traveler

How to switch off auto sync

Traveler constantly updates Lotus Notes which can lead to high data charges. Turning auto sync off is recommended.

  1. Select the Lotus Traveler icon on your device’s desktop.

  2. Select Menu>Auto Sync>Off

Download email manually

There two ways to download your emails manually. Both will will also synchronise your Contacts, Calendar and Tasks at the same time.

  1. Traveler icon then Menu then Sync Now
