Blackberry services at Monash University

As of January 2009 BlackBerry services are only available to nominated staff that have migrated to Lotus Notes. ITS is currently preparing to offer Blackberry services to all University staff at the completion of the Monash University telecommunications tender which is currently in progress.

  1. Who do I call for Blackberry support?

    • University senior executive staff should ring ext 51150 for executive support.
    • Academic and general staff should ring the ITS Service Desk on 51777 for support


  2. How do I move icon locations or change the icons on the home screen?

    1. Press the Menu button (the button with 7 dots)
    2. Navigate to the icon you want to move
    3. Press the Menu button again
    4. Select Move
    5. Move the icon to a new location. If you want the icon on the home screen you must move it to the top row.
    6. Once the icon is in the right location, press the Pearl button.


  3. How do I synchronise mail folders other than my inbox?

    Note: only new mail received in these folders will be synchronised. Existing mail will not be synchronised.

    1. Open Messages (your email)
    2. Press the Menu button (the button with 7 dots)
    3. Select Options
    4. Select Email Settings
    5. Press the Menu button
    6. Select Folder Redirection
    7. Select the folders you wish to synchronise
    8. When finished press the Menu button and select Save
    9. Be patient! It does take some time to start working


  4. How do I turn the speakerphone on/off when answering a call?

    • When answering a call press the ‘$’ key (it has a red speaker picture on it)


  5. How do I set up the device on the Monash Wireless network?

    • Your device is automatically configured to use the Monash Wireless network when it is within range.

    1. To switch wireless on press the Menu button (the button with 7 dots)
    2. Navigate to the Manage Connections icon and select the Pearl button
    3. Navigate to Wi-Fi and select the Pearl button
    4. Once connected, select the red Hang-Up button to return to the home screen
    5. If you are in range of the Monash Wireless Network, after a short period of time you will be prompted for a VPN session password. Enter your Authcate password
    6. Press the Enter key. After 10-15 seconds the Wi-Fi logo in the top right should light up.


  6. Where do I find my SMS messages?

    1. Press the Menu button (the button with 7 dots)
    2. Navigate to the icon titled SMS and MMS
    3. Press the Pearl button


  7. Who is my phone provider and how can I contact them?

    • Your phone provider for Blackberry is Vodafone Australia. If you are having problems with your phone service you can contact them on 135 888 or internationally on +61 414 141 414
    • When calling Vodafone you may be asked for your Vodafone PIN – this PIN is the last 4 digits of your mobile phone number. You can request the Vodafone operator to change your PIN if required
    • Note: Solve communications cannot help with your Blackberry device.


  8. How much does the service cost?

    • Voice charges for Blackberry devices are $40 per month (fixed for 24 months). This includes $40 worth of free calls and SMS.
    • Blackberry charges are fixed at $40 per month. This includes downloading e-mail, attachments, calendar, contacts, etc. This also includes any traffic you download from the Blackberry browser.
    • Note: do not use the Vodafone Live browser as your default browser as using this browser incurs additional costs. You should always use the standard Blackberry browser (the globe with the Arrow around it)


  9. How do I reset my device?

    • You can soft-reset your Blackberry device by pressing ALT + Right Shift + Del at the same time. The device will take approximately 5 minutes to reboot.


  10. How do I lock the keyboard and buttons on my phone?

    • Quickly: press ALT + Enter
    • Alternatively: press the Menu button (the button with the 7 dots) then select the Lock button.


  11. How do I switch off the Voice Activation button?

    1. Press the Menu button (the button with the 7 dots)
    2. Select Options
    3. Select Screen/Keyboard
    4. Select Left side convenience key opens
    5. Change the setting to Nothing
    6. Press the Menu button
    7. Select Save
