Recycling and Waste Achievements 2008

 2008 Initiatives  Progress
Review and make recommendations to improve IT and AV (audio visual) equipment re-use/recycle programs within Monash
  •  During December an Office Clean-out event was conducted which collected and appropriately disposed of over 8 tonnes of e-waste
  • An early scoping of options to recycle items through Monash Market Place was conducted.
Implement recommendations for recycling/re-use (possibly via Monash Market Place  As above
Embed standards in IT equipment preferred supplier arrangements that facilitate e-waste disposal – eg, RoHS  This is being conducted in conjunction with the development of the 2008/2009 desktop and laptop tender.
Develop a University-wide e-waste program with Office of Environmental Sustainability (OES)  Currently reviewing third party companies and their services
Review and improve uptake of duplex printing, and embed into Standard Operating Environment (SOE) with duplex and black and white options as default
  •  The Green IT Steering Committee reviewed the options and impacts of introducing default duplex printing.
  • From first semester 2009, two student labs will default to duplex printing. The result from this pilot will be used to support a wider uptake of default printing across Monash
Further the use of recycled paper (with OES) During 2008 the Procurement Board endorsed the proposal for all printing paper at Monash to have a minimum content of 80% recycled paper.
Implement new Monash Fax service (PC based and will reduce paper) and develop disposal strategy for obsolete fax machines  The new Monash Fax service has been deployed at Berwick, Peninsula and Parkville with Gippsland soon to follow.
